Andrean Acropolis

The Acropolis is the Andrean student newspaper.
The Acropolis was first published in November 1959. A group of freshman, under the direction of Sr. Alice SS.C.M., produced the first issue. It was four pages. In that first issue the editors gave this explanation for the name. "In ancient Greece, the Acropolis was the center of activity and interest. We hope our paper will be the center of interest at Andrean, recording and reflecting Life at Andrean."

In the early 70's Sr. Alice passed the baton to Sr. Gilmary SS.C.M. and the 73-74 staff received an award from the Columbia Press Association. Mrs. Edith Dakich followed by Mr. Ray DeFabio took the reins for most of the 80's. Mrs. Teresa (Bushemi) Procter (69) brought the paper into the computer age. She taught the staff to use desktop publishing software to produce the paper. The Acropolis continued to receive awards under the direction of the next moderator, Mrs. Terry Putz. Under the present moderator, Mrs. Nancy Kelley-Fernandez, every phase of production of the newspaper is computerized.

Awards
Under the direction of Mrs. Nancy Kelley-Fernandez. The 2006-07 Acropolis again won the First Class Honor Ranking from the National Scholastic Press Association, with one Mark of Distiction in the category of photography, art, and graphics.
Under the direction of Mrs. Nancy Kelley-Fernandez. The 2003-04 Acropolis earned the International First Place Award for Superior Achievement from Quill and Scroll and a First Class award from the National Scholastic Press Association.
During the 2000-2001 school year, the Acropolis once again earned the Merit Award from the Indiana High School Press Association. The Acropolis was one of the top six high school newspapers in the state of Indiana.
On October 12 - 13, 1999 the Acropolis staff attended the Indiana High School Press Association convention at Franklin College. The students received the Hoosier Merit award for the 99-00 paper and two Harvey Awards. Jeanne Hovanec '01 received a Harvey for Column Writing and Erin Lesniak, '00, received a Harvey for Graphic Design.

During the 1999-2000 school year, The Communicators of Northwest Indiana chose the Acropolis as the best high school newspaper in Northwest Indiana. Kevin Brown (Class of '01) was awarded first place for sports writing.The Acropolis was also voted best high school newspaper in the state of Indiana for schools with enrollment up to 1100 students by the Indiana High School Press Association. Jim Drzewiecki '00, Co-editor in Chief and Sports Editor was awarded a National Pulliam Journalism Scholarship from Franklin College.
